Why you still have hypothyroid symptoms even though your blood tests are normal?

Have you been told your lab tests are all “Normal”? Lab ranges are inaccurate, based on the average of the sick people who take the the tests at that lab the year prior. Bell curves are used and if you are not sicker then then average sick person, then you are told that your tests are normal. Yet you still suffer with adrenal fatigue and hypothyroid symptoms. Functional lab values are more sensitive to reveal problems, and you should base your lab your results on ranges based on healthy people.

This is why your lab tests are normal but you still feel sick:

A true thyroid functional test to determine hypothyroid:

TSH..this is what conventionally is ordered

But what about these?

  • Total T4 (thyroxine)
  • FTI (free thyroxine index) (amount of T4 available)
  • FT4 (free throxine) (affected by prescription drugs)
  • T3 Uptake (How much of T3 is taken up by TBG)
  • FT3 (free triodothyroxine) (Active Thyroid Hormone)
  • Reverse T3 (Body can not use)
  • TPO and TBG Antibodies (Hashimotos)
  • TSH Antibodies (Graves Disease)
  • TBG levels
  • Typical Thyroid Test Ordered
  • TSH

How can you manage health without all the information? Burning out the thyroid gland with hormone replacement is a 50 year old model. In order to manage your health you need to look at the causes of the problem…not just the symptoms. Hashimotos Thyroiditis (hypothyroid) and Graves Disease

These are not Thyroid problems! Your immune system is mistakenly attacking TPO or TBG (Hashimotos) or TSH (Graves Disease). It is an immune problem! There is an imbalance in your immune system that needs to be addressed.

Thyroid Supports:

  • Bone metabolism
  • Immune System
  • Brain/Nervous System
  • Endocrine System (adrenal glands, ovaries, testes)
  • Gastrointestinal function
  • Liver and gallbladder
  • Growth/Sex hormones
  • Fat Burning
  • Insulin and Glucose Metabolism
  • Healthy cholesterol levels
  • Proper stomach acid

Every cell in your body has Thyroid receptors!

Why 80-90% of the time, thyroid medications won’t work, and how to determine if yours is:

It’s because the most common causes of hypothyroidism, 80-90%, is Hashimoto’s autoimmunity. Whereby an individuals immune system has created antibodies against their own tissue. In this case, against their own thyroid. Meaning, 8-9 individuals out of 10, that have a hypothyroid problem, have an immune based problem (and a large part of the other 10-20% have problems occurring outside of the thyroid). So, it’s really no wonder why adrenal fatigue and thyroid suffers continue to suffer despite thyroid medication.

With Hashimoto’s , in functional medicine 101, that means the immune system mistakingly confuses the thyroid tissue with a foreign invader. That is, the problem with the thyroid primarily comes from the immune systems attack on the thyroid. Which then impacts the mechanics of the thyroid. And in turn, the immune system impacts how effective the thyroid it is working.

The Common Denominator Between The Adrenals and The Hypothyroid:

Stress

Stress is the common denominator between adrenal fatigue and hypothyroid. Stress, whether physical, mental, emotional, environmental, toxic, pathogenic, or otherwise. All of these stressors impact your body metabolically. Meaning, all of your cells, tissues, all of your organs, and systems, have a thyroid receptor that helps the metabolic activity of that cell. All of these cells need thyroid hormone activity to speed it up or slow down.

So stress impacts thyroid function, in many different ways. Stressors impact your body, your stress fighting system, the adrenal gland system, is also impacted. With continued exposure to stress, adrenal fatigue develops, even though your doctor doesn’t believe in adrenal fatigue. Hence Adrenal Fatigue and thyroid function are connected to each other by stress.

Hypothyroid Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Increase in weight gain even with low calorie diet
  • Morning headaches that wear off as the day progresses
  • Depression
  • Constipation
  • Overly sensitive to cold weather
  • Poor circulation and numbness in hands and feet
  • Muscle cramps while at rest
  • Catches colds and other viral/bacterial problems easily and has difficulty recovering
  • Wounds heal slowly
  • Require excessive amount of sleep to function properly
  • Chronic digestive problems (hypochlorhydria)
  • Itchy dry skin
  • Dry or brittle hair
  • Hair falls out easily
  • Edema, especially facial (myxedema)
  • Loss of outside portion of eyebrows

Adrenal symptoms

  • Cannot stay asleep
  • Cannot stay asleep
  • Craves salt
  • Slow starter in the morning
  • Afternoon fatigue
  • Dizziness when standing quickly
  • Afternoon headaches
  • Headaches with exertion or stress
  • Weak nails
  • Perspire easily
  • Under high amounts of stress
  • Weight gain when under stress
  • Wake up tired even after 6 or more hours of sleep
  • Excessive perspiration, or perspiration with little or no activity

Understanding the thyroid and Adrenal mechanics in order to heal both

Stress breaks down both

Thyroid Basics AND Adrenal Basics

  1. Hypothalamus sends signal to pituitary gland via TRH
  2. Pituitary gland send signal to Thyroid via TSH
  3. TSH cause enzyme TPO to stimulate release of T4 (93%) and T3 (7%), these hormones ride the “taxi cab” thyroid binding globulin (TBG)
  4. Hypothalamus sends signals to the pituitary gland via CRH
  5. Pituitary gland send signals to Adrenals via ACTH
  6. Adrenals release corticosteriods, mineralocorticoids
  7. Main Hormone Released is Cortisol

Primary Hypothyroidism

Thyroid gland gets lazy and the pituitary gland tries to “kick it in its pants” by pumping extra TSH (high TSH). Only pattern of the six that may need HRT. (Hashimotos may need it too)

Nutritional support if caught early can reverse the problem

  • Porcine Thyroid Gland
  • Ash Waganda
  • Vit. A, D, Selenium, Zinc

To support T4 to T3 conversion

  • Guggulu
  • Anti-peroxidative compounds
  • Phosphatidylcholine, SOD, Catalase, Glutathione

Hypothyroidism Secondary to Pituitary Hypofunction

  • Pituitary gets lazy (low TSH below 1.8)
  • Chronic stress fatigues the gland
  • Hormone pills including Synthroid
  • Creams with Estrogen
  • Postpartum depression; pregnancy can fatigue the Pituitary Gland
  • Fluctuating insulin/glucose levels (Adrenal Gland fatigue)

Nutritional Support

  • Procine Thyroid and Pituitary Gland
  • Rubidium Sulfate
  • Sage Leaf Extract
  • L-Argine
  • Gamma Oryzanol
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Manganese

Hypothyroid Due To Thyroid Under-Conversion

The gland is making enough T4 but there is a decrease in conversion from T4 to the active form T3 (low T3) Why?

Chronic Adrenal Stress gives rise to increased cortisol which suppresses T4 to T3 conversion. Chronic infection or inflammation. 60% of the conversion takes place in the liver. So if you have toxic exposure, fatty liver, congestion, excess xenobiotics, all will impact the liver, and in turn, impact conversion of T4 to T3. Another 20% of conversion takes place in the gut. An unhealthy biome, viruses, parasites, bacteria, bio-films, etc, all will impact the conversion of inactive T4 to active T3. Often missed because low T3 doesn’t affect TSH only T4 does and T3 is rarely checked for with the blood test.

Nutritional Support

  • Glutathione Cream (Oxicell) to reduce inflammation
  • Phosphatidylserine Cream to support the Adrenal glands
  • Compounds to support T4 to T3 conversion- Guggulu, Selenium, Zinc, Anti-peroxidative Compounds

Hypothyroidism, Thyroid Over-Conversion, and Decreased TBG

Too much active T3 is made and is overwhelming the cells or too little TBG which means too much free T3. Why?

No. 1 cause is insulin resistance especially in women. The cells are not “listening” to insulin so more insulin is secreted. This increases testosterone levels in females resulting in too much free T3 and too little TBG.

Nutritional Support

Stabilize blood sugar/ insulin via diet and nutritional compounds

Hypothyroidism from Thyroid Resistance

Pituitary and Thyroid glands are fine and so are the hormone levels. However the hormones aren’t getting into the cells. Why?

Chronic stress response stimulates the adrenal glands to produce too much cortisol which causes cells to be resistant to thyroid hormones. Solution & Nutritional Support: Address the adrenal malfunction

Genetic Testing, to determine the genetic relationship between adrenal fatigue and hypothyroidism.

Importance of Genetic Testing

Methylation is VERY important for the following processes to occur in our body:

  • DNA/RNA synthesis (turning on/off genes)
  • Brain chemical production (e.g. dopamine and serotonin)
  • Hormonal breakdown (e.g. estrogen and testosterone)
  • Creation of immune cells (e.g. NK cells and T-cells)
  • Creation of protective coating on nerves (i.e. myelin formation)
  • Processing of chemicals and toxins (detoxification)
  • Produces Energy

When poor methylation occurs in our body, here is what can happen:

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid Disorders
  • Neurological Disorders…Parkinson’s, tremor disorder, MS, dystonia, dizziness and vertigo, seizure disorder, peripheral neuropathy, migraines and cluster headaches.
  • Hormonal regulation issues such as PMS, ovarian cysts, fibroids, PCOS in women or low testosterone in men
  • Autoimmune disorders and Immune deficiency
  • Chemical sensitivities and allergies
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Chronic Pain Syndromes (neck, back, shoulder, knee, etc.)
  • ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s syndrome, dyslexia, and learning disabilities.
  • Insomnia
